A major northern cyclone is going to hit California in the US within the next few days. It has been named Hillary, which is currently heading toward Mexico. According to Reuters, Hillary is a Category 4 cyclone. After hitting the American coast, it is feared that due to this, 3 states of America – California, Arizona, and Nevada can get as much rain as a year within a day.
According to the New York Times, 10 inches of rain has been warned in Mexico’s Baja California over the next 2 days. Because of this, there has also been a possibility of floods in Mexico and California. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this storm will first hit Mexico and then move toward California.
However, this storm is continuously moving toward the North. In such a situation, if it hits California first, then it will be the biggest northern storm in the last 84 years. For the first time, a Category 4 hurricane warning has been issued for Southern California.

Mexico and California are on high alert following cyclone warnings.

What is a cyclone?
Cyclones are circular storms that form over warm oceans. When these cyclones reach land, they bring with them heavy rains and strong winds. These winds can destroy trees, vehicles, and sometimes even houses that come in their way.
A storm is a kind of disturbance in the atmosphere, which comes through strong winds and with it rain, snow, or hail. When they occur on land, they are called common storms, but storms that rise from the sea are called cyclones. Cyclones are more intense and dangerous than ordinary storms.
Cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons all three are the same thing and they are also called Tropical cyclones. Cyclones are called by different names around the world. The longest hurricane or cyclone in the world formed in 1979 in the northwest Pacific Ocean. Its diameter was 2200 kilometers, which is almost half the size of America.

Why do cyclones slow down with time?
Cyclones usually begin to weaken a few hours or days after reaching land, as they lose the energy and moisture they get from warm ocean waters. However, even then many times cyclones travel far into the land and bring with them heavy rains and wind, causing great destruction.
Cyclones may persist for several days or weeks but tend to slow down and dissipate as they pass over large land areas or cold seas.
